Watch and learn with this series of videos by David Sibley, each focused on drawing a different North American bird species. The Terror Bird – also known as Phorusrhacos – was a large carnivorous bird that was discovered by Florentino Ameghino in the spring of 1887 in Santa Cruz, Argentina. Enjoy the satisfaction of seeing the world a little differently and understanding it a little better. But don't worry about that. Drawing birds is about so much more than just drawing birds. I guarantee your drawings will get better. With practice, you can fill those gaps in your knowledge. Each drawing is a demonstration of what you know about a bird and will also reveal what you don't know. Measure your success by the insights and understanding that come from the process. Most of your illustration attempts will not result in pretty pictures, but don't let that discourage you. While photographs are helpful for learning technical details, the only way to really get to know birds is to watch them in life. Then test how much you've learned with a quick sketch of the same image.īe sure to also study and draw live birds whenever you can. Try a study drawing, where you methodically replicate the intricacies of a photograph. Drawing what you see in a photo will help you explore shapes and patterns without having to deal with a live bird's movement (or disappearance) you can take as much time as you need. Studying close-up photos of birds will allow you to decipher details that are very difficult to classify in life. Paying attention to how a bird holds its wings, or the pattern of dark markings on the flanks, or details of bill shape and color, or any number of other characteristics, will help you to draw those things. I spend a lot of time watching birds and just thinking about drawing them. This makes them challenging, but not impossible, to draw from life. Place Feathers Intentionallyīirds move a lot and quickly. The only place a bird normally looks "fluffy" is on the underside of the body between the legs and the tail, and sometimes on the back of the head. After starting your drawing with big shapes, you need to connect those with smoothly curved lines with no sharp angles or breaks. All feathers grow toward the tail and press against each other to form a sleek, aerodynamic shell. Keeping that in mind, and striving to develop an understanding of feathers, is fundamental to drawing birds. Feathers' primary function is streamlining-allowing birds to move easily through the air even at high speed. Smooth the FeathersĪlmost everything we see when we look at a bird is feathers. Soon you'll be able to see the bird in your sketch even when all you've drawn is a few generic shapes. Practice seeing simple shapes on a live bird, and experiment with putting them on paper. Draw these lines lightly and use them as a guide. Then use stronger lines as you build up the shape. Imagine the point on which the body would balance, and put a vertical line for the feet right there. Begin your drawing with large shapes to establish proportions and posture-an oval for the body, a circle for the head, a line to show the angle of the bill and eye. Birds are complex, and drawing is about simplifying. His first year at Cape May Light, Harry Palmer earned $960. Daughter Ada later told her son Charles Givens, “We were so seasick and scared that we were all happy to land safely, and start our new life at Cape May Light.” (Two years later in 1926, stormy waters undermined Cape Henlopen Lighthouse and the 45-foot They were sad to leave their beloved Delaware, but on crossing the hazardous shoals in Delaware Bay, a bad storm brewed with gale force winds. Nature forced them to depart the 1767 Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, which was teetering and tottering seaward. Mayhugh’s grandfather and family-wife, three daughters and son– arrived at their new home at the Cape May Light – the official name- in 1924. (One of the houses was later expanded to accommodate two keeper families. The first floor featured three rooms, front and back porches, and a stairway to four second floor bedrooms. The basement and walkways were red brick. The grounds that ran toward the sea were surrounded with white-washed fences. (It is now the private home of the Cape May Point State Park superintendent.) Originally there were two identical white clapboard cottages, one and one-half stories, with red trim and green shutters. This only surviving keeper’s house was built in 1860. They lived in that white house down there.” It is my peace to absorb the power of nature and stay connected to the Palmer family. “I come early for my watch at the top,” she says, “a half hour or so to meditate and enjoy the beauty, solitude and quiet my grandfather must have experienced at this high level. She is one of several contemporary keepers of the Cape May Lighthouse, a museum since 1988, telling its 148-year history and lore to the 100,000 visitors each year. Like her grandfather, she is a lighthouse keeper, and has been for 11 years. She is his descendant, his granddaughter– Mayhugh Palmer Tees, who inherited his proclivity for life at the top. She has a striking resemblance to Cape May’s last lighthouse keeper, Harry Hall Palmer. Who is this solitary figure? An apparition, the lost spirit of Florence Arabelle “Belle” Palmer who assumed keeper duties when her husband Harry suffered a serious heart attack in 1933?Ī surreal phantom she certainly is not. “Flounder must be running,” she says to herself, observing a village of vessels. She scans the horizon for oil tankers, fishing boats, sloops, schooners and ferries. She pauses, touches the rail, and circles the observation deck, absorbing the 360-degree view from 136 feet high. The light salty breezes rustle her log book as she writes. This July morning the sun splashes millions of diamonds on the sapphire sea. On a clear day she can see 20 miles in all directions. This is her ritual, no matter the sea-swept winds, rain and fog that sometimes shroud the red cap atop the cream tower that is Cape Island’s most visible landmark. Saturday mornings at 8:15 a.m., this slender dark haired woman, moving with a dancer’s grace, ascends the 199 steps to the look-out at the Cape May Lighthouse. Here it is - the most-comprehensive eligibility list available on the web. Written by Charlene Rhinehart, CPA Published on DecemKey takeaways: A flexible spending account (FSA) is an employer-sponsored health benefit. She doesn’t need much health nor effectiveness. Her passive also reduces her S3 cooldown when somebody dies, thus making it harder for your enemies to kill your entire team easily.ĭue to her kit, she is easy to build. She gets a buff that counter attacks when she takes a critical hit. Her S3 cleanses debuffs, revives all allies and gives everyone immortality. Moonlight Heroes (PvP) Remnant VioletĪ thief that has revive, immortality and an anti one shot passive. Good artifacts to go on him are Rihanna and Luciella, Dust Devil, Symbol of Unity and Exorcist’s Tonfa. If you cannot get more than 230 speed, you can run a speed buffer ahead of him and turn him into a follow up damage dealer alongside a combat readiness pusher. He does require a lot of stats to perform at the highest level, so do be prepared to spend some time to gear him. Once he is able to kill 1 unit, he can snowball really hard since he gains an extra turn after a kill. He also can defense break on his S1, giving him more utility. Units like Sinful Angelica or Yuna will improve his DPS in team play. His single target damage goes up with speed buff and attack buff. He is one of the first units to have elemental advantage on fire units, as long as he has a speed buff. Although now it is harder to cleave in higher PvP battles, he still offers the very useful speed imprint alongside good damage. When the game first came out, he was a really popular single target attacker in the speed cleave meta. However, if you are a new players, speed is probably the hardest stat to get without giving up damage. Ideally if you can get her to 180+ speed with the above stats would be really good. Her own artifact Secret Art Sword Storm is the best to get a free attack buff when enemy uses a non-attack skill. She also has life steal and evasion buff on her S3, improving her survivability just a bit. Her passive cleanses any debuffs immediately, including stuns. If you cannot outspeed the enemy, she will be good in that role. She can snipe enemy attackers if you have her exclusive equipment that targets the unit with the highest attack. Think about problem units like Angel of Light Angelica, Summertime Iseria, Peira, Conqueror Lilias and so on. CelineĬeline is good at dealing with teams that rely on non-attack skills. For a 3 star unit, I would highly recommend it. If you cannot get speed to more than 200, then a combat readiness pusher is required. In terms of stats, you are going to aim for something like this to make him extremely self sufficient to use without an attack buffer or CR pusher: Good artifacts for him include Symbol of Unity, Sasha’s Ithanes and Exorcist’s Tonfa. He can then follow up with S2 nuke (gives +15% hit chance) with soul burn, which provides extinction and is great for dealing with problem units like Arbiter Vildred, ice attackers or any revive teams. His S3 gives him an extra turn + a greater attack buff. He is only a 3 star, but because of the specialty change, he now gains critical hit rate buff on his S3, making him very easy to gear. Other good options are El’s Fist and Merciless Glutton. All in all, she helps regular players without access to many strong ML units. The key artifact here would be Uberious Tooth, as the extra attack bypasses ML Celine’s passive. However, a very well geared Hwayoung can still get through it easily with soul burn. She can delete most of the problem units like A.Ravi, Belian, ML Celine and Violet easily, as long as they are not behind Aurius and a thick shield. This will grant her max bonus damage.Ī low speed Hwayoung is okay if you don’t have the speed gear for it. Having her at 10k-13k hp is ideal as most tanks/bruisers/healers have 20k health or higher. Her S3 ignores 100% defense and deals extra damage based on her health up to a 6667 hp difference. Even misses (deals only 75% damage) can kill units like Violet/Remnant Violet or any non ice tank. Even though she is a fire unit, she can also deal with many ice units due to her kit scaling with only attack. A relatively new banner and Hwayoung is probably one of the most versatile single target attacker. Swirls are here to stay and Tori is showing us how to do them right during fall. This sudden gear-shift may surprise those who are unaware of the Investigator’s hidden passions. They may appear calm and collected on the surface, but when topics of interest come up in conversation, Fives transform into a giddy and energetic version of themselves. The path to mastery in a particular area is a journey each Investigator readily embarks on.
